Freightliner XC Ride Quality: A Real Customer's Experience with Koni EVO Shocks

If you own a motorhome built on the Freightliner XC chassis, you've probably spent time looking for ways to improve ride quality and handling. While many owners focus on sway control, another common complaint is a harsh front-end ride that makes every bump, pothole, and rough road feel more severe than it should.
We recently spoke with Maurice, a longtime Henderson's Line-Up customer, about his Freightliner XC motorhome equipped with Freightliner's newer VFS (Variable Front Suspension) front axle. After already completing several suspension upgrades, he returned to install the newly released Koni EVO front shocks. Here's what he experienced.
Q: Why Did You Return to Henderson's Line-Up?
Maurice has owned multiple motorhomes over the years and has trusted Henderson's Line-Up with previous coaches.
When he purchased his current Freightliner XC, he already knew suspension upgrades would be one of the first improvements he'd make.
Maurice shared:
"Once you get the different shocks on there, it's a night and day difference. We always come here because this is the place to go."
His confidence wasn't based on advertising. It came from previous experience seeing firsthand how suspension upgrades improved the way his coaches drove.
Q: What Suspension Upgrades Had Already Been Installed?
Before returning for the front shocks, Maurice had already invested in several handling improvements, including:
- Koni EVO rear shocks
- Rear sway bar
- SuperSteer Motion Control Units (MCUs) to equalize the airbags
- Safe-T-Plus steering stabilizer
Those upgrades had already transformed the way the coach handled.
Before the work, Maurice was only comfortable driving around 60 mph.
After the initial suspension upgrades, he said he was comfortable traveling at normal highway speeds.
Maurice explained:
"Once you did those items, going home I could go 70, 75."
Q: Why Didn't You Install Front Shocks the First Time?
When Maurice first visited Henderson's Line-Up, the Koni EVO front shocks for the Freightliner XC VFS suspension were not yet available.
As soon as they were released, he scheduled another visit to complete the suspension package.
Q: What Makes the Freightliner VFS Front Suspension Different?
Freightliner's VFS front suspension is a newer option available on certain XC chassis.
According to Henderson's Line-Up's experience, the VFS suspension provides somewhat better sway control than the older straight I-beam front axle.
However, one characteristic remained noticeable.
The ride could still feel firm over rough pavement, potholes, expansion joints, and other road imperfections.
That made the newly available Koni EVO front shocks an ideal opportunity to improve ride comfort while maintaining vehicle control.
Q: What Did the Coach Feel Like Before the New Front Shocks?
Before installation, Maurice described the ride as acceptable on smooth pavement.
The problems appeared when the road surface became rough.
He noticed:
- Every small bump could be felt through the front suspension.
- Speed bumps required slowing considerably.
- Rough pavement transmitted harsh impacts into the coach.
- The front suspension felt noticeably stiffer than the rear.
These are common complaints among many Freightliner XC owners with factory front shocks.
Q: What Changed After Installing the Koni EVO Front Shocks?
The difference was immediate.
Within the first few moments of the test drive, Maurice noticed a significant improvement.
His first reaction:
"Right away... you feel a lot more control."
As the drive continued, he repeatedly commented on how much smoother the coach felt over bumps that had been very noticeable just minutes earlier.
Even while driving faster than during the initial test drive, the ride felt noticeably more comfortable.
Q: How Do Koni EVO Shocks Improve Ride Quality?
One reason the Koni EVO shocks perform differently is their combination of larger shock construction and Koni's proven Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) technology.
Frequency Selective Damping automatically adjusts how the shock responds depending on the type of suspension movement.
During slower suspension movements, such as body roll, bouncing, and weight transfer, the shock remains firm to provide excellent vehicle control.
During rapid suspension movements caused by rough pavement or small road imperfections, the shock allows more compliance to help reduce harshness before it reaches the driver.
The EVO series also features a larger bore shock body, providing an excellent balance between ride comfort and handling control.
Q: Was the Difference Noticeable Even After Other Suspension Upgrades?
Yes.
Maurice had already installed several upgrades that significantly improved the coach's handling.
Even so, he described the Koni EVO front shocks as the final piece that completed the suspension package.
He referred to them as:
"The icing on the cake."
Q: What Was Your Overall Impression?
After completing the test drive, Maurice summed up the experience simply.
"It was noticeably different... considerably better."
He explained that while no large motorhome will ever ride exactly like a luxury car, the improvements made the coach much more enjoyable to drive and left him excited for future trips.
He also shared that he wouldn't hesitate to recommend Henderson's Line-Up to other RV owners based on his experience.
What Does This Mean for Freightliner XC Owners?
If your Freightliner XC motorhome feels harsh over bumps, transmits every road imperfection through the steering wheel, or leaves you feeling fatigued after long days behind the wheel, your factory shocks may be limiting your coach's ride quality.
As Maurice's experience demonstrates, suspension upgrades often work best as a complete package. Components such as sway bars, steering stabilizers, Motion Control Units, and premium shocks all serve different purposes, working together to improve stability, comfort, and driver confidence.
