What Is a SuperSteer Trim Unit and Is It Worth Adding to Your Safe-T-Plus?
Learn how the SuperSteer Trim Unit works with a Safe-T-Plus steering control to improve driver comfort in crosswinds, road crown, and changing driving conditions on Freightliner Super C motorhomes.
What Is a SuperSteer Trim Unit?
If your motorhome is equipped with a Safe-T-Plus steering control, you've probably experienced the added stability and steering confidence it provides. But what happens when you're driving through a strong crosswind or spending hours on a road with a heavy crown?
That's where the SuperSteer Trim Unit comes in.
The SuperSteer Trim Unit allows you to adjust the center position of your Safe-T-Plus steering control while you're driving. Instead of fighting constant steering pressure caused by changing road conditions, you can make quick adjustments from the driver's seat, helping reduce fatigue and improve comfort over long distances.
How Does the SuperSteer Trim Unit Work?
The Trim Unit is an air-operated system designed to work alongside your Safe-T-Plus steering control.
With the push of a momentary switch mounted inside the cab, the system temporarily releases the clamping force on the steering control's anchor assembly. As you steer into a crosswind or compensate for road crown, the Safe-T-Plus establishes a new center position. Once you release the switch, the system locks that new center point in place.
The result is a steering stabilizer that's adjusted for your current driving conditions without having to stop and manually reposition it.
Why Would You Need to Adjust the Center Position?
Road conditions are constantly changing.
You may encounter:
- Strong crosswinds
- Heavy road crown
- Uneven pavement
- Long stretches of highway requiring continuous steering input
Normally, these conditions require you to hold steady pressure on the steering wheel to keep your coach tracking straight.
With a Trim Unit, the Safe-T-Plus can be adjusted to hold that steering position for you, reducing the amount of constant correction needed from the driver.
Why Does This Work Especially Well on Air Ride Coaches?
The SuperSteer Trim Unit uses compressed air to operate, making it an excellent fit for air ride motorhomes. Because these coaches already have an onboard air system, the Trim Unit integrates naturally into the existing air supply. This makes it particularly well suited for larger diesel-powered Super C motorhomes built on Freightliner chassis.
How Is the Trim Unit Installed?
The Trim Unit works in conjunction with the Safe-T-Plus steering control. The steering control still attaches to the tie rod in the same manner as a standard installation. The primary difference is on the anchor side of the steering control.
Instead of using a conventional fixed mounting bracket, the Trim Unit utilizes:
- A specialized mounting bracket
- A sliding bolt assembly
- An air chamber
- An electrically controlled solenoid dump valve
- A momentary switch mounted inside the cab
When the driver presses the switch, the solenoid releases air pressure from the chamber, allowing the sliding bolt assembly to move and establish a new center position. Once the switch is released, the air chamber repressurizes and securely clamps the assembly into its new position.
Although the steering control installation itself is straightforward, routing the air lines and installing the control switch inside the cab requires careful planning. Every coach is different, so switch placement is typically customized to provide the most convenient location for the driver.
Does the Trim Unit Replace a Safe-T-Plus?
No.
The Trim Unit is designed to work with a Safe-T-Plus steering control, not replace it. The Safe-T-Plus continues to provide its steering stabilization and return-to-center characteristics. The Trim Unit simply allows you to adjust where that center position is while driving.
What Coaches Can Use the SuperSteer Trim Unit?
The SuperSteer Trim Unit is designed for several chassis.
Current applications include:
- Freightliner M2
- Freightliner S2RV
- Freightliner XC
- Roadmaster RR8/RR4
Development is also underway for the:
- Freightliner Cascadia Super C
As additional applications become available, SuperSteer continues expanding fitment options for more Freightliner-based motorhomes.
Does a Freightliner Cascadia Need a Trim Unit?
The Freightliner Cascadia is already an exceptionally stable chassis. Unlike many motorhomes, it typically isn't pushed around excessively by wind or passing trucks.
However, even highly stable coaches can benefit from being able to compensate for:
- Long stretches of road crown
- Steady crosswinds
- Changing road conditions
- Driver fatigue caused by constant steering pressure
Rather than making major handling corrections, the Trim Unit provides another level of refinement that allows drivers to fine-tune their steering feel while traveling.
What Does This Mean for Freightliner Super C Owners?
A Safe-T-Plus steering control already provides significant improvements in steering stability and driver confidence. Adding a SuperSteer Trim Unit builds on those benefits by allowing the steering control to be adjusted on the fly for changing driving conditions.
Whether you're traveling in steady crosswinds, driving on heavily crowned roads, or simply looking to reduce steering effort during long travel days, the Trim Unit offers an added level of convenience and control that many Freightliner Super C owners appreciate.
